Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Is OCD ruining you and your loved ones' lives?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) isn’t just about being neat or liking things in a certain order – it’s a severe mental health condition that involves persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) that you feel driven to perform in response to those thoughts.

For many, OCD creates a constant cycle of anxiety, fear, and frustration. The compulsions may provide temporary relief, but they don’t address the underlying worries, leaving you stuck in a loop that feels impossible to break.

You’re not alone. OCD affects around 1 in 40 adults in the UK, and its impact on daily life can be profound. It can affect your relationships, work, mental health, and even your physical well-being if left untreated.

What OCD Really Feels Like

OCD doesn’t look the same for everyone, but common experiences include:

  • Intrusive thoughts that create intense anxiety or discomfort (e.g., fear of contamination, harming others, or making mistakes)
  • Compulsive behaviours that you feel compelled to do to reduce the anxiety (e.g., washing, checking, counting, or repeating actions)
  • Avoidance of situations or places that trigger obsessive thoughts
  • Overthinking or feeling "stuck" in a loop of worrying or obsessing over a certain thought or action
  • A need for perfection or a fear of things being "wrong," which can drive you to repeatedly check or fix things
  • Guilt or shame about the obsessions or compulsions, even though you know they’re irrational
  • Excessive time spent performing rituals or avoiding certain situations, making it difficult to focus on other aspects of life

OCD isn’t a character flaw – it’s a neurological condition that can be managed with the right approach. The good news is that you can break free from the grip of OCD, regain control, and reclaim your life.

My Approach to Treating OCD

As a Clinical Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist, I take an evidence-based approach to managing OCD.

Together, we’ll work to identify and address the root causes of your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, and break the cycle in a way that is lasting and sustainable.

My approach is personalised, compassionate, and rooted in neuroscience to ensure lasting change, not just temporary relief. I combine a range of techniques, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Together, we’ll gradually expose you to the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger your obsessions, without engaging in the compulsive behaviour. Over time, this helps reduce anxiety and disrupts the cycle.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) – focusing on practical, solution-oriented strategies to break the cycle of OCD. We’ll look at your strengths and resources to develop effective ways to manage and reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsions.
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy – using deep relaxation to access your subconscious mind, we can reframe the triggers for your obsessions and help you develop new, healthier ways of responding to anxiety-inducing thoughts or situations.
  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) – to shift the mental and emotional patterns that reinforce OCD, helping you feel more in control and less compelled to engage in rituals.
  • Neuroscience – teaching you about how your brain works and how neuroplasticity can be harnessed to build new, healthier habits and ways of thinking. I’ll show you how your brain can adapt to break free from the obsessive-compulsive cycle.

This dynamic, integrated approach doesn’t just mask the symptoms – it helps you rebuild the foundation of your mental health and learn new ways of thinking and behaving that support a calm, focused mind.

Why Hypnotherapy for OCD?

Hypnotherapy is a highly effective tool in treating OCD, particularly when combined with other techniques like CBT and SFBT. In a deeply relaxed state, hypnotherapy helps bypass the overactive, anxious mind and work directly with the subconscious, where many obsessive thoughts and compulsions originate.

By reprogramming underlying fears, limiting beliefs, and emotional triggers, hypnotherapy helps reduce the urgency of compulsive behaviours and the anxiety that fuels them. This allows your mind and body to find a natural rhythm of calm and balance. It’s not just about eliminating symptoms; it’s about healing the emotional and mental patterns that sustain OCD.

Research shows that hypnotherapy can significantly reduce OCD symptoms, often providing lasting relief in a relatively short time frame.
