Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@richardtaylortherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Hypnotherapy combines talking therapy with hypnosis to guide you into a relaxed, focused state. In this hypnotic state, your brain waves naturally slow down, allowing access to the subconscious mind, where around 95% of our behaviours, habits, and emotional patterns reside. This relaxed state enhances neuroplasticity, meaning the brain is more receptive to change, making it easier to break old patterns and form new, healthier ones.

Hypnotherapy works by helping you access a relaxed, focused state where the critical, conscious mind quiets down, allowing us to work directly with the subconscious. This is where deep-rooted habits, beliefs, and emotional patterns live. In this state, your brain becomes more open to suggestion and change through a process called neuroplasticity - its ability to form new neural connections. Using guided techniques, we can gently shift unhelpful patterns and support positive, lasting change.

Hypnotherapy can support a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and physical issues by working directly with the subconscious mind. Common areas include anxiety, stress, low confidence, fears and phobias, trauma, insomnia, addiction, weight issues, and IBS. It’s also highly effective for breaking unwanted habits, building self-esteem, and managing performance or exam nerves. Because it’s tailored to you, it can be adapted to suit a wide variety of goals and challenges.

Yes, hypnotherapy is completely safe when carried out by a qualified, trained professional. You remain in control and aware throughout. Hypnosis is simply a natural, focused state, similar to daydreaming. It’s a gentle, non-invasive and drug-free approach that works with the subconscious mind to support positive change.

No, you will not lose control during hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and focused attention. You will be fully aware and remain in control of your actions at all times. It’s important to remember that hypnosis is not a form of mind control. You cannot be made to do anything against your will. Instead, it helps you tap into your subconscious mind to explore solutions and make positive changes. You are always in control and can choose to stop at any time if you feel uncomfortable.

No, you cannot be hypnotised without your consent. Hypnosis only works when you choose to participate, and you remain in control throughout the process. You cannot be made to do anything against your will during hypnosis.

Absolutely! Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions. Approximately 70% of my clients now choose the convenience and comfort of virtual sessions.

Recent studies support this approach. For instance, a 2023 study published in Nature Mental Health analysed outcomes from over 27,500 patients in the UK and found that online therapy was as effective as in-person sessions for treating anxiety and depression. Moreover, patients who received online therapy experienced improvements more quickly and utilised fewer additional medical services, making it a cost-effective option.

When therapy was first developed 100 years ago, they didn’t have the technology we do today. If they did, you can be sure they’d be using it! The mind doesn’t know whether we’re in the same room or on a screen; it just knows how to respond to the power of suggestion and the deep relaxation of hypnosis.

So, whether in person or online, the therapeutic experience is exactly the same. You’ll still receive the same level of care, support, and transformation, no matter where you are.

Hypnotherapy may not be suitable for individuals with certain conditions, such as psychosis or epilepsy, as it could exacerbate symptoms. We conduct a thorough consultation to ensure hypnotherapy is right for you. If you’re unsure, reach out to discuss your situation or learn more about our personalised clinical hypnotherapy services.

Yes, everything you share in our sessions is treated with the utmost confidentiality. Your privacy is a core part of the therapeutic relationship, and I create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can speak freely. As a registered member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), I follow their strict ethical codes and professional guidelines to ensure your trust and safety are always respected.

You’ll be pleased to know that my methods are rapid, with most clients seeing improvements within the first 1-2 sessions. On average, most clients typically work with me for 6-10 sessions, depending on their individual needs. Some issues can be resolved in just a few sessions, while more complex issues may take a little longer. However, hypnotherapy is not like traditional therapy -  you won't be coming to see me endlessly for years! We focus on quick, effective results, allowing you to make meaningful progress without long-term commitments.

Each session is split into two parts. The first half is positive, solution-focused talk therapy where we explore your goals. This sets a strong foundation for the second half, which is the hypnotherapy itself. During hypnosis, I guide you into a deeply relaxed state where we can work with your subconscious mind to reinforce those positive changes. You remain fully aware and in control throughout, and leave the session feeling calm, focused, and empowered.

Yes, everyone can be hypnotised. Hypnosis is a natural state that we all drift in and out of daily, like when you're fully absorbed in a film or lost in thought while driving. As long as you're able to follow simple instructions, you can be guided into hypnosis. It’s not about being weak-minded or gullible - it’s about focus, relaxation, and readiness to create positive change.

Yes, you will typically remember what happens during hypnosis. Most people remain fully aware and can recall everything that’s said and experienced during the session. Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state, not sleep or unconsciousness, so you stay mentally present the entire time. Some people describe it as feeling similar to daydreaming or deep meditation.

Yes, hypnotherapy is safe and effective for children. They often respond particularly well due to their active imaginations and natural openness to suggestion. It can support a wide range of issues such as anxiety, sleep difficulties, confidence, bed-wetting, exam stress, and unwanted habits like nail-biting. I am professionally trained to work with children from the age of 8, and I hold an enhanced DBS check for your peace of mind. All sessions are age-appropriate, gentle, and designed to help your child feel safe, supported, and empowered.

A qualified hypnotherapist should have formal training in hypnotherapy from a recognised and accredited institution. Look for practitioners who hold diplomas or certifications from reputable training bodies, and who are registered with professional organisations such as the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) or the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). It’s also important they have up-to-date insurance and, if working with children or vulnerable people, an enhanced DBS check. Additional training in related fields like psychotherapy and counselling is also a valuable sign of a well-rounded practitioner.

Did you know? Only around 20% of hypnotherapists in the UK hold the HPD qualification recognised by the NCH. Choosing someone with this level of training means you’re working with a professional who’s met rigorous national standards in the field. You can be sure I have trained to this gold standard.

Look for a therapist with proper qualifications, positive client reviews, and a style that feels comfortable for you. Good rapport is key. We offer a free consultation to ensure we’re the right fit for your needs.
